
Using Twitter to only broadcast news about your business is like walking up unannounced to a group of people chatting at networking event, handing out your business card, and giving a spiel about why they should buy your product. To do such a thing without finding out who they are and what they’re talking about would be weird, writes Shel Israel for American Express Open Forum. It’s the same with social media.
If businesses don’t listen to online conversations and respond to them personally they run the risk of appearing distant and uninterested in what potential customers have to say.
As an active Twitter user, I wholeheartedly agree. Lately, I’ve only been following people who engage in conversations, people who might someday even talk to @salubriousdish. The spammers who only post links to their blogs or business sites don’t appear to care what anyone has to say. And that’s just rude.
