Video streaming over the Internet accounts for more and more traffic; Web video alone accounted for about 37 percent of Internet traffic last November. Supporting this claim is a new report by Sandvine, a broadband and wireless service provider, which reveals that Netflix is officially the largest single source of downstream Internet traffic during peak times in North America.
The popular Internet subscription service for streaming movies and TV shows accounts for 29.7 percent of peak downstream traffic, up from 21 percent last fall. The top four sources of traffic—Netflix, HTTP websites, BitTorrent, and YouTube, respectively—account for nearly 70 percent of all downstream traffic.
