In case you’re not familiar with PayNearMe, it gives people who don’t have a bank account or credit card a way to pay for things online. Leena Rao recently wrote about the service for TechCrunch and describes how it works. Consumers can place an order for things on merchant sites that offer a PayNearMe option, print out a receipt, then go to a 7-Eleven store to pay in cash. Once the payment is made, the order is fulfilled.
PayNearMe now offers even more payment features. Billers can embed PayNearMe barcodes directly into their customers’ paper statements, which can be taken to a 7-Eleven store for payment. Customers can also buy Greyhound bus tickets right at 7-Eleven POS terminals. The company also has partnered with Ria, a money transfer company, so that people can use its free Ria Card, also available at 7-Eleven stores, to pay more than 3,000 billers. PayNearMe recently raised $16 million in new funding.
