Another day, another high-profile product lab is born.

Craig Walker, who created Google Voice ^[1]–previously known as Grand Central before it was scooped up by Google–has just announced his new venture, Firespotter Labs ^[2]. Like Twitter’s Evan Williams and Digg’s Kevin Rose before him, Walker has assembled a team (three engineers and a designer, two of whom were hired from Google) to create and quickly produce various tech products in-house. Walker calls Firespotter a “company creation shop,” and the start-up aims to take advantage of the low cost of entry to produce Web and mobile solutions. 

Firespotter won’t act as an incubator, eschewing the ideas of outside entrepreneurs in favor of a small, hand-picked team that churns out proprietary products without the hassle of bureaucratic red tape.  After seeing which ideas stick, outside employees can be hired to run the various companies with Firespotter principals acting in an advisory role.

Don’t expect Firestarter to offer the next iteration of an Instagram ^[3] or Words With Friends ^[4], though–the type of social apps that to Walker “sound like a feature, not a company.” Firespotter will build on Walker’s history of broadening communication channels through mobile apps, and he’s looking primarily towards creating tools for big companies that have yet to embrace the mobile revolution.

Walker, who has been an entrepreneur-in-residence at Google Ventures (which is investing $3 million in Firespotter), says his new company is “not interested in building mobile apps for mobile apps’ sake, or doing things that are a little more fun or goofy. The bigger challenge is how do you find big industries that have not yet embraced modern technology.”
