Giving a whole new meaning to the term “viral video,” scammers are spreading a supposed video of Osama Bin Laden’s death across Facebook, in the latest exploitation of the terrorist leader’s recent demise.
If you click on the link promising “Exclusive BANNED VIDEO footage of Osama Bin Laden being killed” you will go to a Facebook page inviting you to like and share the video with your friends. Once that’s done, clicking on the link to view the footage actually brings you to a survey you must complete before you can supposedly watch the horror for yourself. (We didn’t complete the survey so we don’t know what, if anything, is on the video–let us know if you did.) The scammers are paid for every survey completed, which is the whole point of the exercise.
Warn your friends and colleagues not to get sucked in, and in general to approach any online offers of Bin Laden imagery with extreme caution. When in doubt, keep this simple rule in mind: anything with really bad spelling is almost certainly a fake.
